The solid and stolid monuments to the oppressive hierarchies of the past made way for light, clean lines and open, inviting spaces. Public spaces, in this line of reasoning, should be light as air but make themselves felt as art. Architecture is perhaps the perfect modern art because of its anonymity and seeming purity: the space exists, as it were, for itself. Of course that's not technically true.
